Welcome to Lurgan Ancestry

The History of Lurgan, Portadown and District.

On 1st September 2020 was ten years old. For 10 years we have been beavering away in the background, adding photos, videos, articles, updating the website with all the various databases, and information about Lurgan and the surrounding area. The many volunteers who have given their time freely, you the ancestors of Lurgan who have sent us your family photos, BMD records and stories, have all made Lurgan Ancestry the useful resource it has become. We have some unique features here including, The Lurgan Town Householders and Traders Index a database of people who have lived and worked in Lurgan Town since around 1700 up until 1970, our War Dead Search Engine, which holds the names of those men and women from Lurgan, Portadown and District who laid down their lives in two World Wars, our Birth, Marriage and Deaths search engines, which grow weekly and contain over 60,000 names. Our Gravestone Image Galleries which hold one the largest FREE collections of Gravestone photos in Ireland. We now have a Facebook Genealogy Group, which has among it's members some of the best amateur Genealogists who are ready and willing to help you find your Lurgan Ancestors at no cost at all. So here's to the next 10 years and the knowledge it may bring.

Lurgan (from the Irish: an Lorgain meaning "the long ridge") is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The town is near the southern shore of Lough Neagh and in the north-eastern corner of the county. Now part of the Craigavon Borough Council area, Lurgan is about 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Belfast and is linked to the city by both the M1 motorway and the Dublin–Belfast railway line. It had a population of about 23,000 at the 2001 Census. Take a look at our history section for a timeline of major events.

The Lurgan Ancestry Project is dedicated to all those sons and daughters of Lurgan and surrounding areas down through the ages. It is hoped that the information found in our pages will help you discover your Lurgan roots. Over time we hope to put together the story of Lurgan, through newspaper articles, census, birth, marriage and other records, photographs and Lurgan family histories.
