Try to keep your search as simple as possible and only use a surname, rather than the full name, for best results. Keep in mind that the accuracy of spelling we adhere to today, cannot be applied to the past. The majority of people in the 19th century couldn't read or write, so spelling was all guess work or phonetical. It is quite typical to have records for the same family appear under a variety of spellings. "Grady", for example, could just as easily be spelled "Gready" or "O'Grady". A first name could easily be listed as a nickname, not just in the more "formal" form. "Brigid" could be Anglicised as "Bridget", or appear as one of its nicknames, either "Bridie" or "Delia". Don't accept the first negative answer you get, search again with a different spelling. For example you might find the KERR family you are researching under McKERR. Due to the nature of the software sometimes hyphenated surnames are not included in the search results. If you are looking for O'Neill or O'Hara for example, just enter Neill or Hara and all entries will be included. If you have names for spouses or parents, enter the maiden name of the female if known, then scroll down the results looking for the male surname, this works vice versa too. A surname search will also bring up the mother's maiden name in the results, which is useful if you didn't know it. You can also search by year and place of birth.

Spellings have not been changed and are as the original record, which of course may be inaccurate. When transcribing records, we research existing names in our database to ensure continuity, we have not tried to second guess names, dates or places. If a record is not legible or any part of it, it is not included, so the information we have can never be considered complete, but it is to best of our knowledge as accurate as possible.
